One of the most exciting aspects of Kentucky Pick 4 is the amount of control you have over how to play. You can choose to play either a Straight, a Box, or a Straight/Box. This is the wager type where you can win the biggest prizes. Select your numbers in the order that you think they will be drawn. You must get all four in the correct position to receive the payout - worth 5,000 times your stake.
A Box wager gives you the best chance of landing a payout. You still have to match all four numbers to win, but your numbers can be drawn in any order. For example, if you play 5005 and the drawn digits are 0550, you are still a winner.
Split your wager in half to get good odds of a prize and keep yourself in with a chance of a really big payout. You win both parts of the wager if your numbers are drawn in exact order, or just the Box portion if they appear in another order. The minimum wager amount is $1.
If you play a Straight, you can pick any combination of numbers you want and there's only one way you can win. The odds of matching any four-digit combination between 0000 and 9999 exactly are 1 in 10,000. However, if you play a Straight or a Straight/Box, you also have to think about how many of your four numbers are unique and how many are the same as each other.
Playing four different numbers, such as 1234, gives you 24 ways to win with a Box or a Straight/Box wager. That is because there are 24 possible combinations of those numbers. If you pick three numbers that are the same and one that is different, such as 5556, there are just four possible combinations. It would therefore be harder to win than a 24-Way play, but your prize would be bigger.
